The Divine Liturgy

Eastern Christian eucharistic worship is celebrated under three forms:

I. The Divine Liturgy of Our Father Among the Saints, John Chrysostom
Celebrated most Sundays

II. The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great
Celebrated ten times a year

III. The Divine Liturgy of St. James, the Brother of the Lord
Celebrated on the feast of St. James (Oct 23)

IV. The Liturgy of the Pre-Sanctified Gifts
Celebrated on weekdays in Great Lent, and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week

"Then we went on to Greece, and the Greeks led us to the edifices where they worship their God, and we knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth. For on earth there is no such splendour or such beauty, and we are at a loss how to describe it. We know only that God dwells there among mortals, and their service is fairer than the ceremonies of other nations. For we cannot forget that beauty."
Russian Chronicles, 10th century
