The Praise of All Creation
Church worship space mirrors the unity of creation. At the Eastern
end of the building, in the direction of the rising sun, lies
the Holy Place. Here on the Holy Table lays the Lamb which will
become the Body and Blood of Christ through the power of the Holy
Spirit. This area represents for us the celestial realm ever-present
but normally beyond our sight.
At the Western
end of the church stand the faithful in the nave. In a sense,
this area represents the world or normal human activity. Here
stand also many icons, images of the saints and other holy people
once of earth, now in heaven, who join with all humanity in worship.
Separating---or
rather binding--- the two areas together is the iconostasis,
a thin wall covered with images of Christ the incarnate God, the
Virgin, and the saints. The Royal Doors open from the center of
the iconostasis, revealing the Holy Place to the faithful.
